Hair is a filament, mostly protein, that grows from follicles found in the dermis. The human body, apart from the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, is covered in follicles which produce thick terminal and fine vellus hair. Most common interest in hair is focused on hair growth, hair types and hair care but hair is also an important biomaterial and the hair follicle is a well studied biological organ.

Hair, is a term used in contrast to fur, the fine, soft hair found on many nonhuman mammals; wool is the characteristically curly hair found on sheep and goats. Found exclusively in mammals, hair is one of the defining characteristics of the mammalian class. Although other non-mammals, especially insects, show filamentous outgrowths, these are not considered "hair" in the scientific sense. So-called "hairs" (trichomes) are also found on plants. The projections on arthropods such as insects and spiders are actually insect bristles, composed of a polysaccharide called chitin. There are varieties of dogs, cats, and mice bred to have little or no visible fur. In some species, hair is absent at certain stages of life. The main component of hair fiber is keratin.

Cross section of a hair

Hair often refers to two distinct structures (1) the part beneath the skin, called the hair follicle or when pulled from the head called the bulb. This organ is located in the dermis and maintains stem cells which not only re-grow the hair after it falls out but also are recruited to regrow skin after a wound; and (2) the shaft, which is considered the part of the hair above the skin surface though it appears first in the epidermis. The hair shaft, in cross-section, can be divided roughly into three zones. Starting from the outside, (1) the cuticle which consists of several layers of flat, thin cells laid out like roof shingles, (2) the cortex which contain the keratin bundles in cell structures that remain roughly rod like and in some cases (3) the medulla, a disorganized and open area at the fibers center.

Hair gells and hair sprays. $ 3. Hair protection against hair straighteners. $$ Please try to have the prices listed and the brand and stuff. Thanks! Answer Please!

A. 1. My hair is medium length, and I got my straightener from Rite Aid since I'm not rich and all. A decent straightener from stores like Target, Walmart, and Rite Aid should do fine. Just don't buy straighteners under 20 dollars. 2. Hair Gel...I suggest you not to use it unless you want to spike up the back of your hair. It makes your hair look very stiff, not to mention greasy. There is this AWESOME hairspray called 'Mink'. They don't sell these at stores anymore, but you can get them from Amazon.com. (Link is in the source) Well, Wallgreens supposedly have them, but I never saw them there. These hairspray work very well, and I have been using it for two years. They don't make your hair look stiff at all (in fact, it leaves your hair… [cont.]

What are some good hair straightening products?
Q. My hair is just a tad bit wavy, but it prevents me from doing what I want my hair to do. I have side bangs that I flat iron every morning, so then I normally flat iron all of my hair. But the problem is, I'm going to Quebec next week with some people from school, and I know that my roomates aren't going to want me to take even longer getting ready by flat ironing my hair each morning. Are there any good hair problems that straighten hair, and actually work? Or are there any tips to keep my hair, especially my bangs, from getting wavy?

How do I recover from from damaged hair while transitioning to go natural?
Q. I have not gotten my hair relaxed in a year. At first, it was not intentional for me to go natural, I just hated going to get my hair relaxed everytime there was a little new growth. Now I want to go natural and embrace my hair, however in the process I have kept my hair in a ponytail for a year and have not taken much care of it. Now after a year, I've noticed breakage of the relaxed hair and the short nappy hair is left. Parts of my hair is still long and other parts (the parts in the middle where I had my ponytail and in the front) have broken off considerably until all thats left is my natural hair. I was just wondering if this will affect my hair when I decide to chop it all off. My natural hair is atleast an inch long at the… [cont.]

A. i also stopped relaxing my hair and now its natural except for some ends i need to trim...anyway by this time those places that are relaxed are probably just dead hair that is coming out, you should cut them off. try cornrowing your hair (not too tight) and if you wear tight hairstyles stop it!! the relaxed hair will continue to break i thinks its normal when you're transitioning. what i did was as my natural hair grew more and more i slowly cut off the ends. i cut little but little and now the natural hair as long enough to my liking that i can cut the dead end off completely.hope i helped a bit..

Hair is a 1979 film based on the 1968 Broadway musical of the same name about a Vietnam war draftee who meets and befriends a tribe of long-haired hippies on his way to the army induction center. The hippies introduce him to their countercultural lifestyle of marijuana, LSD, "be-ins", and protests.
