How come a rainbow formed on paper when it was put on the projector?
Q. My teacher put a bunch of 10-15 pieces of paper on top of each other on the projector to cover up some of it, and a rainbow-coloured line formed on the paper when the light shone on it. How come? How does that make colours though?

A. I'm not quite sure I understand the details, but from the sound of it what was happening was white light was diffracting around the edge of the paper. When that happens, the different colors in white light bend different amounts, so that the colors separate and you see a rainbow. Google "white light diffraction" for more details and to see if what you were seeing was physically consistent with the explanation above.

How were the continents of the world formed?
Q. Is it possible that they were formed after a cosmic impact that ripped open the crust - and magma poured forth to accumulate into continents? Or maybe when the impact that created the moon occured, the leftover bit became Pangea?

A. The Earth was formed as dust coalesced out of the stellar cloud about 4 billion years ago. Some billion years later, another planet, about the size of Mars, collided with Earth and changed the nice even ball of iron and rock into an unbalanced ball of iron and rock being orbited by the Moon. The rocky material, lighter than iron, floats on the surface to a depth of about 30 miles. The Oceanic crust is only about 6 miles deep. The depth of the Pangaea crust created pressures that enabled molten material to crack it apart and force the pieces away from each other. The parts are now the current continents.
