Peace describes a society or a relationship that is operating harmoniously and without violent conflict. Peace is commonly understood as the absence of hostility, or the existence of healthy or newly healed interpersonal or international relationships, safety in matters of social or economic welfare, the acknowledgment of equality and fairness in political relationships. In international relations, peacetime is the absence of any war or conflict. The study of peace also involves the causes for its absence or loss. These potential causes include: insecurity, social injustice, economic inequality, political and religious radicalism, and acute racism and nationalism. From the Anglo-Norman pas , and meaning "freedom from civil disorder", the English word came into use in various personal greetings from c.1300 as a translation of the biblical terms pax (from the Vulgate) and Greek eirene, which in turn were renderings of the Hebrew shalom. Shalom, cognate with the Arabic "salaam", has multiple meanings: safety, welfare, prosperity, security, fortune, friendliness. The personalized meaning is reflected in a nonviolent lifestyle, which also describes a relationship between any people characterized by respect, justice and goodwill. This latter understanding of peace can also pertain to an individual's sense of himself or herself, as to be "at peace" with one's own mind attested in Europe from c.1200. The early English term is also used in the sense of "quiet", reflecting a calm, serene, and meditative approach to the family or group relationships that avoids quarreling and seeks tranquility — an absence of disturbance or agitation.

In many languages the word for peace is also used a greeting or a farewell, for example the Hawaiian word Aloha, as well as the Arabic word Salam . In English the word peace is used as a farewell, especially for the dead as in Rest In Peace, RIP.

Considering Volunteering with the Peace Corps or a Similar Organization - Where should I go?
Q. I am considering joining the Peace Corps (or a similar private organization) for anywhere between a month to four months after I graduate in June. I'd prefer to go to an African nation or a former Soviet territory. Any recommendations as to which country I should request? I'd like to work with kids, possibly receive a small amount of medical training to become a nurse (or something similar). Also, do you think I should go with the Peace Corps, or a private organization? Thank you! I'm currently 17, turning 18 in October.

A. Okay, first off, I assume by your age you mean you are graduating high school and not college. Therefore, I am going to tell you the god s honest truth, though I am sure you do not want to hear it. You will not qualify for a funded volunteer abroad organization, esp. not Peace Corps. Reasons you are not a good match for Peace Corps right now: -You need to be at least 18 years old -You must have a college degree or over 5-7 years experience in your field -You must commit to serve at least 27 months -You do not get to pick the country or region you want (don t listen to anyone who tells you that you can pick your region. I put down my first 3 choices as Africa and I ended up in South America). You can apply for something like a… [cont.]

Why would Turkey cancel a peace agreement with Armenia if the US government recognized the Armenian Genocide?
Q. I know that Turkish people say it wasn't a genocide, while the Armenians do. Also, I know that Turkey and Armenia are trying to get a peace agreement signed so both nations will have open borders and normal diplomatic relations. What I don't get is, why would Turkey cancel the deal if the US Congress recognized the Armenian Genocide as an actual genocide? It doesn't directly affect Turkish-Armenian relations, does it?

A. It is not a peace treaty. Just a protocol with a very fuzzy content. The most obvious part of its content is the opening of borders. What you wonder is just about the very nature of international politics. Every country (usually stronger ones) uses carrot-stick or similar tools to shape others' behaviors. That's why USA keeps sanctions on Iran (stick) but funds Egypt and Israel regularly every year (carrot). Turkey would not even consider opening its borders to Armenia unless they stop their occupation of Azerbaijani territories (Nagarno-Karabag). Yet, these genocide claims are seriously hurting Turkey's image. So, if it will be recognized by the US congress anyways, why should Turks give away without receiving anything in return? I am… [cont.]

How do I know if the peace corps is right for me?
Q. I really want to make a difference with my life. I know I'm not going to be able to change the world, but if I can help someone somewhere, that will at least be something. I am a senior in high school now, and I'm thinking about joining the peace corps after my associates degree. But how do I know if that will be right for me?

A. Have you ever lived in a place with limited infrastructure -- even camping for a few weeks? Did you like it? How do you handle stress or conflict situations? Do you have much experience working with people who are of a VERY different social, cultural or economic background than you? Have you ever traveled on your own anywhere? Here is a web site that can help you learn more about the skills and experience desired by long-term placement organizations, such as the PeaceCorps, and how you can start to gain such experience locally, wherever you are now. You are never too young nor too old to start engaging in activities and training that will make you a viable candidate for long-term volunteer placement agencies:
